William Albert Sherwood was born in 1887 in Kempsey, Worcs., (Upton on Severn Q3-1887 6C:303), baptised in Kempsey on 30th May 1887, son of Enoch and Jane SHERWOOD (née EVEREST). 1891 census...Aged 3, he was at Bridge Cottage, Kempsey, Upton on Severn with his father Enoch SHERWOOD [41] gardener born Kempsey; his mother Jane [42] borm Hever, Kent, and brother Charles E. [5] born Kempsey. 1901 census...Aged 13, he was at Parsonage End, Toddington, Beds with his parents and brother Charlie (apprentice house decorator). 1911 census...Aged 23, single, a gardener/caretaker, he was at Woodlands (empty mansion),Holywell Road, Mildenhall. His parents were inn keepers at the Gardeners Arms, West Street, Mildenhall and later moved to Barton Mills. His father died in 1922. |

Enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The battalion were the Pioneers for the 41st Division and on 4th October the Battle of Transloy was in progress. The Battalion were employed re-forming trenches and carrying ammunition. CWGC gives 6 of the 19th Middlesex killed on 4th October 1916, only one with a known grave.
